Huggins’ Condition Is Upgraded to Stable

Cincinnati basketball Coach Bob Huggins is making progress in his recovery from a heart attack and is expected to be released from the hospital by the end of the week.

The 49-year-old coach was in stable condition at the Medical Center in Beaver, Pa., hospital spokesman Scott Monit said Monday. Huggins was in serious but stable condition on Sunday.

Cincinnati sports information director Tom Hathaway said Huggins probably will spend another four to six days in the hospital before coming home.

Huggins had the heart attack at the Pittsburgh airport on Saturday. He was there to catch a flight to Milwaukee for a coaching clinic.

Cal State Los Angeles has hired Stephen Thompson and Brandon Loyd as men’s assistant coaches, Golden Eagle Coach Dave Yanai said. Thompson was a former Syracuse All-American who also starred at Crenshaw High. Loyd, an Oklahoma native, played at UCLA from 1996 to ’99.... Massachusetts Coach Steve Lappas has had his contract extended for one year, through the 2006-07 season.

Martina Hingis was stunned by 169th-ranked Nadia Petrova, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of the Kremlin Cup at Moscow. It was Hingis’ first match since her fourth-round loss to Monica Seles at the U.S. Open.

In another upset, French Open champion Albert Costa was eliminated by Nicolas Escude, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, in the only men’s match.

Michael Chang defeated Francesco Clavet, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Japan Open at Tokyo. Chang will next play Lleyton Hewitt.

Jurisprudence

Defense lawyers asked a judge to throw out the charges against former NBA player Jayson Williams, who is accused of shooting a limo driver to death and trying to cover up his role.

The defense accused prosecutors of misconduct before the grand jury that indicted Williams on first-degree manslaughter and other charges.

Steven C. Lember, acting Hunterdon County Prosecutor, denied the defense’s accusations and said the requests were expected.

Defending champion Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel lost 2 and 1 to Donald Cox in the opening round of match play at the USGA Senior Amateur Championship at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.

Richardson, 56, was trying to become the first repeat champion in the event since William Campbell in 1980.

The United States rallied to upset Brazil and advance to the second round of the World Volleyball Championships after a 25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 33-31, 15-12 victory at Buenos Aires.

The 32nd annual Eclipse Awards dinner, a $300-a-plate, black-tie event which will honor the champion horses and horsemen in thoroughbred racing, will be held Jan. 27 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.
