From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police are seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run accident on the San Diego Freeway in Huntington Beach in which a motorcyclist was severely injured by a driver who illegally entered the carpool lane.

Christopher Rowland, 28, of Westminster was heading south on his motorcycle in the carpool lane just south of Beach Boulevard during the morning rush hour Sept. 26 when a driver in the No. 1 lane who had been stopped crossed over the two sets of double-yellow lines into the lane.

Rowland rear-ended the car, which is believed to be a white Mazda. He suffered major internal injuries.

The driver of the car fled, but one or two witnesses chased the car.

Police believe that although those witnesses didn’t get the license plate number, they might be able to provide details that would help the California Highway Patrol find the driver.

Rowland is still recovering from his injuries at UC Irvine Medical Center.
