Soloing it, spoofing it

Share

Sick of solo shows? Looking for a modern-day equivalent of the vaudevillian hook?

In “Easy Targets,” at the Actor’s Lab Theatre in Hollywood, six soloists tread the boards only to become the targets of rolled-up socks hurled by bored audience members. The socks are rented on the premises -- four for $1, and strolling sock vendors keep a fresh supply of projectiles available.

The titles of the six hapless performances: “All About Me,” “Hi Dad, I’m Gay,” “An Evening With Abraham Lincoln,” “Just Clownin’ Around,” “Yes I Can, Sir” and “What Did I Say? A Field Guide to the Female of the Species” -- each representing a different, well-worn solo genre.

The writers and performers are the Burglars of Hamm, the troupe that earlier spoofed academic theater in “Resa Fantastiskt Mystisk.”

No one is performing his or her own material -- “we wanted to give each other material that’s impossible and humiliating to perform,” said resident director Matt Almos.
