More Bears Dying on Tahoe Roads

The number of bears killed in the Lake Tahoe area is on the rise, wildlife advocates say.

Eight bears have been killed by vehicles on Tahoe’s Nevada side this season, and four more had to be shot because they were breaking into homes to get food, said Carl Lackey, a biologist for the Nevada Division of Wildlife.

He blamed a combination of a drought that has left scant food for bears in the Sierra Nevada and a lack of bear-proof garbage containers.

Ann Bryant, president of the Bear Preservation League, said 13 bears have been killed on the California side.
