Enriquez Riding Hot Streak

Share

In terms of winning percentage, Isaias Enriquez is the hottest rider at Santa Anita.

The jockey, who is clicking at about 9% for the year, won with six of his first 16 mounts at the Oak Tree meet.

Those hoping to take advantage of this hot streak will have only one chance this afternoon.

Enriquez has a single mount on the eight-race card -- 20-1 shot Serious Smoke in the fifth.

More power to Enriquez if he’s able to get that one home. A 2-year-old Smokester gelding, he needed a trip to Pomona to break his maiden, outlasting a weak field of $32,000 California breds in his fourth start. In his first three races, at Hollywood Park and Del Mar, Serious Smoke, who is owned by JP Racing, Inc. and trained by Joe Parga, had finished fifth, fourth and sixth.

There isn’t much to get excited about on the rest of the program. There are six favorites who are 7-5 or less on the morning line. Starship Saratoga, who is dropping two levels, is 6-5 in the second; Sligo Bay, who has been facing better, is 6-5 in the third; Ghost Memo, who is facing a weak field of 2-year-old maiden claimers, is 6-5 in the fourth; Unfurl The Flag, who was second in a minor stakes, is 7-5 in the fifth; Miss Continental, another dropper, is 7-5 in the sixth, and Exsexy Cop, who is dropping for trainer Bob Baffert after failing as the favorite at Bay Meadows, is 7-5 in the eighth.

Race of the day: Graded stakes winners Shiny Band and Critical Eye head the field in today’s eighth at Belmont Park, a $58,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

Who’s hot: A Bunch Of Maniacs. A 5-year-old Bertrando gelding, he will be seeking his fourth consecutive victory and fifth in his last six starts in tonight’s seventh at Bay Meadows. He is co-owned and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.

Who’s not: Billy Badgett Jr. and Joe Aquilino. The trainers are a combined one for 41 at Belmont Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Decimate and Excellentcharacter in the first, singling Starship Saratoga in the second and using Sligo Bay, Venator, Trompolino and Hataab in the third.
