Kahne Wins at Irwindale

Kasey Kahne prepared for the upcoming Turkey Night sprint car race at Irwindale Speedway by winning the 40-lap United States Auto Club Western Sprint Cars feature Saturday night in front of 3,940.

Kahne, whose last appearance at Irwindale resulted in a third-place finish in the 2001 Turkey Night Sprint race, battled for the lead with Bud Kaeding and Tony Hunt. Kahne pulled away despite a yellow flag with five laps to go.

In the 30-lap USAC Western States Midget series feature, Riverside’s Josh Wise dived under Danny Ebberts with 10 laps to go and held on for his second victory this season.

The Grand American Modified series closed its season with a 50-lap Open Competition feature. Series runner-up Travis Thirkettle took over the lead on Lap 32 and held on.

Jon Cox of El Cajon won the 20-lap Ford Focus Midget feature.

L.W. Miller passed Jamie Tomaino with little more than 50 laps to go and earned his first victory in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified series.

Miller, who led only 10 laps in the first 17 races this season, beat Rick Fuller to the finish line by 0.779 seconds in the Advance Auto Parts 200 at Martinsville, Va., to win in his 70th start.

The result helped further jumble the points race, the closest in series history. Mike Stefanik remained in front, boosting his lead from eight points over Jerry Marquis to 52 over Fuller.

Ted Christopher is third, 77 points behind, with one race left. Marquis dropped to fourth, 96 points behind, after finishing 39th, and Chuck Hossfeld fell from third to fifth, 104 points back, after finishing 29th.
