Santa Ana Schools Set Recall Vote

Santa Ana school board members late Tuesday set Feb. 25 as the date for the recall election of fellow trustee Nativo V. Lopez, in what is expected to be the final round in a battle for control of Orange County’s largest school district.

The recall movement, which began with the circulation of petitions in March, has evolved into a referendum on the school board majority, which includes trustees Nadia Maria Davis and John Palacio. Both face reelection Nov. 5 and are opposed by many of the same people who seek Lopez’s ouster.

Critics blame the board majority for what they call failures in the 62,000-student Santa Ana Unified School District, including delays in new school construction.

In a separate vote, the board also granted $24 million in construction contracts for expansion projects at Washington, Roosevelt, Jackson and Lincoln elementary schools. Work could begin within a month, officials said.
