Sabres Hand Flyers Their First Loss, 2-1

Miroslav Satan scored the go-ahead goal at 10:42 of the third period as the Buffalo Sabres handed the Philadelphia Flyers their first loss of the season, 2-1, Tuesday night at Buffalo, N.Y.

Satan, who turned 28, scored a goal on his birthday for the second time in his career. Vaclav Varada also scored for the Sabres, and Martin Biron stopped 21 shots.

Eric Weinrich scored for the Flyers (3-1-2-0), who have at least one power-play goal in each of their six games.

Buffalo defeated Philadelphia in all four of its meetings last season.

Edmonton 3, Colorado 3 -- Ryan Smyth scored at 9:06 of the third period to give the Oilers the tie at Denver.

Patrick Roy played in his 971st game, tying Terry Sawchuk’s NHL record for career appearances by a goaltender.

Pittsburgh 3, Montreal 3 -- Mario Lemieux assisted on all three Penguin goals, including Aleksey Morozov’s tying goal with 10 seconds left in regulation at Montreal.

Carolina 4, New York Islanders 1 -- Sami Kapanen and Rod Brind’Amour scored power-play goals 23 seconds apart in the second period, and the Hurricanes won at Uniondale, N.Y.

Minnesota 4, Calgary 3 -- Cliff Ronning’s power-play goal 1:58 into overtime gave the Wild the victory at St. Paul, Minn. Minnesota (4-1-1-0) moved into first place in the Northwest Division.

Phoenix 2, Nashville 1 -- Shane Doan and Ladislav Nagy scored in the first period, and the Coyotes won at Nashville.
