Despite popular catch-and-release techniques, a study blames recreational anglers for overfishing that has some California species near extinction.

Recreational fishermen have long denied responsibility for overfishing and blamed commercial fishing for ocean looting. But a new study from the Marine Science Institute at UC Santa Barbara contradicts that view.

The analysis showed that the recreational catch of 17 species of rockfish exceeded the commercial catch every year from 1980 to 2000.
