KEYS TO THE GAME

Share

Gary Klein’s keys to the game, and how the Trojans measured up:

1. Control Onterrio Smith. Smith had gained more than 100 yards in each of the previous seven games, but the Trojans limited him to 79 yards in 19 carries. USC has not allowed a running back to rush for more than 100 yards this season.

2. Execute the kicking game. The fine play of the offense and defense overshadowed another shaky performance. USC surrendered an average of 25.5 yards per kickoff return and tried several pooch kicks to slow down the Ducks. Ryan Killeen kicked a 48-yard field goal, but an extra-point and field-goal attempt were blocked.

3. Neutralize the crowd. USC took the Autzen Stadium crowd out of the game in the second half by scoring 30 unanswered points. The fans were streaming toward the exits at the start of the fourth quarter.
