Junior Michael Haddan of Irvine Woodbridge is regarded as one of the top cross-country runners in the Western region of the U.S. after winning his first seven races this season and setting course records in two of them.

But the defending state 800-meter champion in track says he hasn’t decided if he’ll run in the West region championships at Mount San Antonio College on Dec. 7.

“It depends on how I feel,” Haddad said. “We’ll make the decision near the end of the season.”

Haddan did not run in the West region championships last year after finishing fifth in the state final.

An injury to her right hip kept freshman Brenda Cohen of Canyon Country Canyon, The Times’ No. 3-ranked team in the Southland, out of the Mount San Antonio College Invitational cross-country meet Saturday, but her coaches are hopeful she’ll be able to race in the Foothill League finals at Castaic Lake on Nov. 7.

Cohen, Canyon’s top runner, suffered the injury during a workout Oct. 21. She hasn’t run since but has taken part in daily pool workouts to maintain her cardiovascular fitness.

Junior Monika Rothenburger of No. 6 Dana Point Dana Hills hasn’t raced since the Clovis Invitational cross-country meet in Fresno on Oct. 12 because of an injury to her left hip, but Coach Andy Sims is hopeful she’ll run in the South Coast League finals at Laguna Niguel Regional Park on Nov. 7.

“The thing acting up in her hip is the same thing that gave her problems last track season,” Sims said. “I thought she ran her best race of the season in the Clovis Invitational, but she needed a break [from racing] after that.”
