Bret Engemann completed 21 of 47 passes for 226 yards and Marcus Whalen ran for 141 yards and two scores as Brigham Young defeated Hawaii, 35-32, Friday night at Provo, Utah.

The victory avenged the Cougars’ 72-45 loss last season at Honolulu that spoiled BYU’s 12-0 start.

The Cougars (2-0), who trailed, 17-14, at halftime, pulled away in the third quarter when Hawaii (1-1) stalled offensively, then had to hold off a charge by the Warriors.

“A win is good, I’m telling you,” Cougar Coach Gary Crowton said. “I don’t care if it’s one point or 50.”

Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang was 20 of 52 for 275 yards but was intercepted four times.
