Ex-Mayor Pleads Guilty to Income Tax Evasion
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Former Mayor Michael Mitoma pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court Monday to failing to pay $3,846 in taxes on his official salary in 1995 and 1996.
In exchange to his plea to two misdemeanor counts, prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of zero to six months in custody.
Mitoma, who arranges joint ventures between Asian and U.S. companies, served seven years as Carson’s mayor, a part-time job that paid about $16,000 annually. He was defeated for reelection in 1997.
His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4.
