BIG WINNERS

* Adam Hill, a junior at Anaheim Esperanza, made a school-record 12 receptions for 203 yards in the Aztecs’ 35-34 victory over Fallbrook. Last season, Hill had to play quarterback because quarterback Rick Taloa sat out most of the season because of a foot injury and the Aztecs had one of their worst seasons in years.

* Manuel Hurtado had four interceptions in L.A. Roosevelt’s 44-7 victory over L.A. Lincoln. Teammate Tony Sanchez had two.

* Perry Martinez, a sophomore running back at La Puente, was in the lineup against Whittier because of an injury to starter Brian Porter. Martinez rushed for 167 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown run, in a 34-14 victory.

* Mojave sophomore Adrian Nunez was called up from the junior varsity to replace quarterback John Prosesl, who injured his thumb in last week’s game. In his varsity debut, Nunez completed eight of 12 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-7 victory L.A. Baptist.

UPSETS

* That Taft defeated Carson, 39-0, wasn’t so much an upset. That this was supposed to be a possible preview of the City championship made the outcome astounding. Last season’s quarterfinal meeting between the schools was won by Taft, 17-14.

* Last season, Lakewood spiraled to a 1-8 record after losing to rival Lakewood Mayfair, which finished 11-3 and won the Southern Section Division VI championship. This season, Lakewood scored on its first five possessions, took a 45-0 lead and won the battle for the Milk Bucket, 52-9.
