Walter, Arizona State Leave No Doubt, 65-24

There’s no longer a quarterback question at Arizona State.

Andrew Walter passed for 414 yards and five touchdowns in his first start this season, leading the Sun Devils past Stanford, 65-24, Saturday at Tempe, Ariz.

Walter, a sophomore who started in two losses last year, earned the starting job by rallying the Sun Devils (4-1, 1-0 in conference) to victories in their last two games.

This time, he had them leading 38-16 at halftime. Arizona State had its highest Pac-10 point total and Walter’s five touchdowns passes tied Jeff Krohn (2000) for third best in school history.

Cornell Canidate had a nine-yard touchdown reception and ran for touchdowns of one, eight and seven yards, validating Arizona State Coach Dirk Koetter’s decision to give the freshman his first start. Canidate had 77 yards in 15 carries as the Sun Devils won their fourth in a row.

Casey Moore scored on a two-yard pass play from Chris Lewis and a 68-yard run for Stanford (1-2, 0-1). The Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils, 130-65, in their previous three games.

No. 13 Washington 41, Idaho 27--Cody Pickett threw for 438 yards--the second-most in Washington history--and three touchdowns as the Huskies (3-1) defeated the Vandals (1-4) at Seattle.

Pickett completed 32 of 44 passes without an interception, one week after throwing for 404 yards in a 38-7 victory over Wyoming. He holds the school record of 455 yards, which he set last season.

Washington suffered a setback after standout receiver Reggie Williams didn’t return after spraining his left knee early in the second quarter. The severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known.

Arizona 14, North Texas 9--Gary Love ran back a blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the first half to help the Wildcats (3-1) defeat the Mean Green (1-4) at Tucson.

Mike Bell had a 14-yard touchdown run for Arizona, which ran out the last 2:44 after missing its fourth field-goal attempt with 4:58 left.
