A multi-vehicle crash Thursday in Winnetka involving a bus carrying disabled people left one person dead and seven injured, including a woman who was clinging to life.

The private carrier bus, headed east on Sherman Way, broadsided a westbound sedan making a left turn onto Fullbright Avenue about 2 p.m., authorities said, killing the car’s passenger and critically injuring its driver. The passenger was identified as Paula Notarangelo, 21, of Victorville.

The collision caused the bus, carrying nine disabled adults, a caretaker and driver, to skid into parked cars.

Six of the 11 people on the bus, including the driver, suffered bruises and other minor injuries, said Jim Wells of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The identity of the sedan’s driver, described as a young woman, was not released pending notification of relatives.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Paul Modrell said investigators were attempting to determine which vehicle had the right of way.

Left-turn traffic collisions “are always very dangerous,” he said, because the vehicle making the turn is vulnerable to serious damage to the passenger compartment.

Officials did not know the origin or destination of the bus.
