Passing the Buck Over Passing the Exit Exam

Share

“L.A. School Board Votes to Oppose State Exit Exam” (April 9) is just another way of not holding students accountable. When everyone is passing blame on to teachers and making them accountable for student achievement scores, why not hold students and parents accountable? If the teachers are teaching to the California standards, then there is no reason why the students should not pass a test that covers “language arts concepts through the 10th grade and math through basic algebra.” If the school board opposed it unanimously, it must not be very confident about the teachers.

How about different diplomas for different levels of student success? Graduate from high school and get a diploma that says this is what you did. Pass the exit exam and your diploma says that you passed the exam. This way, employers and colleges will decide how important the exit exam is and whether it plays a role in success at a job or in higher education.
