A young woman was shot to death and her male companion critically wounded Wednesday as they sat in a car near her Placentia home.

Police did not release their names, but neighbors identified the woman as Sara Rodriguez, 21, who lived in the neighborhood with several family members, including her young son.

Placentia shooting -- A story in the California section on April 17 misspelled the first name of a woman who was shot to death in her car in Placentia the day before. Her name was Sarah -- not Sara -- Rodriguez.

The shooting occurred about 5:20 p.m. as Rodriguez and her 20-year-old companion, whom neighbors described as her boyfriend, sat in a red, four-door sedan in the 1400 block of Hill Street near Placentia Champions Sports Complex.

Alerted by residents who said they had heard several shots, police arrived to find the young woman dead in the driver’s seat and the man, who lives in Westminster, shot several times, according to Det. Corinne Loomis, a spokeswoman for the Placentia Police Department.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was reported in extremely critical condition, Loomis said. The shooting did not appear to be gang-related, she said.
