Shares of big-screen movie systems maker Imax Corp. jumped 10.5% Wednesday after the company announced that the two sequels to the hit film “The Matrix” would be released in Imax theaters this spring and fall.

The Toronto-based firm said “The Matrix: Reloaded” and “The Matrix: Revolutions,” starring Keanu Reeves, would be reformatted using Imax technology for release on its screens, which soar up to eight stories high. The same process brought “Apollo 13” and “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” to Imax theaters last year.

The first “Matrix” sequel will hit Imax screens shortly after the film’s general release on May 15. The second sequel will have a simultaneous release in Imax and regular theaters on Nov. 5, the first time this has happened with a major live-action film.

Analysts said the news showed Imax was having success with its attempts to persuade Hollywood studios to convert standard film prints to Imax format in tandem with a push to expand its theater network.
