Eagles Extend Dawkins

Three-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins signed a seven-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.

Dawkins, a first-team All-Pro last season, led the Eagles with a career-high 131 tackles, forced seven fumbles, recovered three and had two interceptions. He anchors a secondary that features Pro Bowl cornerback Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor.

Dawkins, 29, has 675 tackles, 10 sacks and 20 interceptions, including two touchdowns, in his seven-year career.

Quarterback Ray Lucas was released by the Miami Dolphins, a move that had been expected after he struggled filling in for injured starter Jay Fiedler last season. The Dolphins were 5-1 when Fiedler was sidelined, then went 2-4 with Lucas as the starter.... The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterbacks Shane Matthews and Greg Zolman two days after drafting Chris Simms of Texas. Simms, the 97th pick in the NFL draft, will probably be the fourth quarterback on the defending Super Bowl champions, behind starter Brad Johnson and backups Shaun King and Jim Miller.... Backup quarterback Joe Germaine was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Iowa quarterback Brad Banks, the national player of the year and Heisman Trophy runner-up, signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins.... The Tennessee Titans signed undrafted Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser as a free agent.... Occidental defensive lineman Kevin Watson signed a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots on Sunday. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound senior from Santa Ana was the 2001 SCIAC defensive player of the year.

Third-seeded Alex Corretja of Spain was upset in the first round of the clay-court Valencia Open in Spain, losing to Anthony Dupuis of France, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Dupuis will next face Fernando Vicente, who defeated fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3.

Paradorn Srichaphan beat German wild card Michael Kohlmann, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the second round of the BMW Open at Munich, Germany.... Former top-10 player Barbara Schett lost her eighth consecutive first-round match, beaten by Anna Pistolesi, 6-4, 6-2, in the J&S; Cup at Warsaw, Poland.... Fifth-seeded Rita Grande of Italy was eliminated from the Croatian Bol Ladies Open with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Tatiana Garbin.

Iowa State basketball Coach Larry Eustachy said drinking was a factor in his behavior at a student party in Missouri, where he was photographed holding a beer can and kissing female students on the cheek.

“I am certainly aware of the role drinking has played in my behavior. I am addressing this matter,” Eustachy said in a statement issued by Des Moines lawyer Jerry Crawford.

Iowa State officials were considering possible disciplinary action against Eustachy, who met with Athletic Director Bruce Van De Velde and university President Gregory Geoffroy after learning the Des Moines Register had copies of the photos.

Teemu Selanne had two goals and an assist as Finland routed Slovenia, 12-0, in the World Hockey Championships at Tampere, Finland.

The Czech Republic beat Austria, 8-1, in Helsinki. Also in Helsinki, Ziggy Palffy of the Kings had two goals and two assists as defending champion Slovakia defeated Japan, 10-1.

UCLA had four of the top 11 golfers and took a seven-stroke lead over second-place Stanford after the 36-hole first day of the Pacific 10 Conference Championships at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

Roy Moon shot rounds of 72 and 71 and was tied for third place overall at one-under par as the top Bruin. John Merrick (even), Travis Johnson (one over) and Steve Conway (two over) all helped UCLA.

In a late scoring change, Don Albrecht of South Shore Yacht Club in Newport Beach was the overall winner on corrected handicap time of the 56th Tommy Bahama Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race.

Passings

Johnny Griffith, who was the Georgia football coach between the tenures of Wally Butts and Vince Dooley, died in Duluth. He was 78.
