A Riverside police officer shot a 35-year-old man who allegedly pointed a semiautomatic handgun at him during a foot chase Thursday, authorities said.
Police said two officers were approaching Ronald McKinnon, who appeared to be arguing with a woman, near the corner of Douglas Street and University Avenue at 6:03 a.m., said Riverside Police Sgt. Steve Johnson.
McKinnon ran away and one of the officers chased him on foot while the other followed him in a police car, Johnson said.
As he ran through an alley near Dwight Street, McKinnon allegedly pointed his gun at the officer.
The officer fired at McKinnon but missed him, Johnson said. At the corner of 7th and Dwight streets, McKinnon allegedly pointed his gun at the officer once more. The officer shot McKinnon in his right leg and took him into custody, Johnson said.
The name of the officer who fired his gun was not released.
