PGA: Streaking Singh Chasing a Red-Hot Love

1 Who’s hot: Vijay Singh, who came close to winning the British Open at Royal St. George’s. Singh tied for eighth at the Buick Open in Michigan and second at the International in Colorado.... Davis Love III, four victories and counting, his best year yet.... Chris DiMarco, second in Michigan, fourth in Colorado.

2 Who’s not: Pat Perez, who has made just four cuts since the beginning of April. Only eight of his last 37 rounds have been in the 60s.... Mark O’Meara, without a top 25 since the Masters.

3 Biggest surprises: Besides the obvious choice, British Open champion Ben Curtis, UCLA alumnus Jay Delsing, who tied for 11th at the Greater Hartford Open, 19th in Michigan.... Geoff Oglivy, tied for second at the Buick, and came in eighth at the International. In 27 starts last year, Oglivy recorded three top 10s.

4 Biggest disappointments: Two former-U.S. Amateur champions, David Gossett and Matt Kuchar. Gossett has two top 10s in 19 starts.... Kuchar is 162nd on the money list.

5 Best round: The closing 69 in the Open by Curtis, who out-dueled some of the game’s biggest names down the stretch.... Under enormous pressure, Suzy Whaley’s opening 75 in Hartford.... Fifty-year-old Craig Stadler’s 63 in the final round to win the B.C. Open.

6 Worst round: A tie between the 83 David Duval shot in the opening round of the Open -- and, yes, another 83 in the opening round the following week at Hartford. Yikes!

7 Best shot under pressure: The eight-foot par putt by Curtis on the Open’s 72nd hole, when it seemed almost inevitable he would record another bogey on the back nine.

8 Worst shot under pressure: Thomas Bjorn’s unfortunate impersonation of Jean Van de Velde at the Open, taking three shots to get out of the greenside bunker at 16. The first effort was excusable. The second was not.

9 Coming attractions: Following the PGA, the WGC-NEC Invitational at Firestone in Akron, Ohio. A week later, the Deutsche Bank Championship will make its debut in Boston. In October, the WGC-American Express Championship. After that, well, there’s always the NFL and the baseball playoffs.
