Sex scenes and nudity on British television increased last year, reflecting more relaxed public attitudes, researchers said Tuesday.

Programs such as “G-String Divas” and “Real Sex” on the Five channel helped double the number of scenes depicting sexual intercourse in 2002.

“Attitudes toward sex and sexual activity have changed over the years,” said Paul Bolt, director of the Broadcasting Standards Commission, a government-funded watchdog.

“People are now more comfortable with programming that contains sexual material as long as they are made aware of the material to be broadcast.”

The research was carried out by the BSC, the British Broadcasting Corp. and the Independent Television Commission, which regulates commercial TV.

The number of nude scenes trebled between 1997 and 2002.
