A two-disc treasure for ‘Pirates’ lovers

Pirates of the Caribbean--

The Curse of the Black Pearl

Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom

Disney, $30

Shiver me timbers! The biggest grossing live-action film of the year makes a seaworthy two-disc set full of treasures and other bounties for budding buccaneers and pirates. Though it is the best film made based on a Disneyland attraction, “Pirates” would have been a more enjoyable voyage if it had been a tad shorter. “Pirates” boasts a no-holds-barred comedic performance from Depp as a Keith Richards-esque pirate captain, the spirited presence of hot young actors Bloom and Keira Knightley, and a scenery-chewing turn from Geoffrey Rush.

The first disc features breezy commentary from director Gore Verbinksi and Depp; another commentary track with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Knightley and co-star Jack Davenport; and a third track with writers Stuart Beattie, Ted Elliot & Terry Rossio, and Jay Wolport. The second disc features the documentary “An Epic at Sea: The Making of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ ”; 19 deleted and alternate scenes; a nifty interactive history of pirates; “Diary of a Pirate,” a video diary with cast member Lee Arenberg; excerpts from the 1968 “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” series focusing on the “Pirates” attraction; a dull blooper reel and photo galleries.

The Ben Stiller Show

Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo

Warner Home Video, $27

In 1992, the relatively unknown Stiller was given his own sketch series on Fox, which ended up winning an Emmy for writing despite lasting only 12 episodes. The series was uneven, but hit the mark far more than it missed.

Among the best sketches: Stiller playing a vengeful Eddie Munster in a spoof of “Cape Fear” titled “Cape Munster”; Stiller as U2’s Bono in an inspired bit about the Irish group’s early days; a takeoff of “Cops” set in ancient Egypt; and a flawless spoof of Woody Allen’s “Husbands and Wives” called “Woody Allen’s Bride of Frankenstein.”

Stiller and his cast, producers and writers supply commentary on several of the episodes.

To Live and Die in L.A.

William Petersen,

Willem Dafoe

MGM, $30

The star of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” made his film debut -- baring his soul and a whole lot more -- in William Friedkin’s gritty 1985 action-thriller about two Secret Service agents hot on the trail of a clever but deadly counterfeiter (Dafoe) in Los Angeles.

The special edition DVD includes a new documentary on the making of the film that includes interviews with Friedkin and his cast, and behind-the-scenes production footage, a strong deleted scene, the dopey alternate ending and above- average commentary from Friedkin.
