Park Renovation Plan Postponed Until March
- Share via
State parks officials have postponed until March a $3.6-million renovation of the popular Morro Bay State Park campground to protect monarch butterflies.
The California Department of Parks and Recreation on Monday closed the Central Coast campground to start the project, which calls for extensive construction and cutting down 76 trees.
City leaders and protesters pleaded with the California Coastal Commission, which then reminded its fellow state agency that the permit forbids any construction during monarch season.
State parks spokesman Steve Capps said his agency will now postpone the project because monarchs winter in eucalyptus trees in the northwest corner of the park.
