Man Shot by Police Had Fake Handgun
An unidentified man who was wounded by Los Angeles police during a foot chase in Encino on Friday had been driving a stolen car and wielded a fake gun that officers thought was real, police said.
The man, who was hospitalized and listed in stable condition Saturday, refused to stop for officers about 9:20 p.m. on Ventura Boulevard near Balboa Boulevard after they determined the car he was in had been stolen, Los Angeles Police Officer Don Cox said.
The man pointed the fake handgun at police before he was shot in the chest.
The shooting is under investigation in conjunction with the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, Cox said.
