Oklahoma Stops Purdue

Drew Lavender made a leaning shot in the lane with 1.1 seconds to play Thursday night at Norman, Okla., lifting No. 11 Oklahoma to a 47-45 victory over No. 16 Purdue.

The 5-foot-7 Lavender had 14 points and Kevin Bookout added 12 as the Sooners (6-0) won their second in a row against a top-20 opponent. Oklahoma was coming off an 80-77 overtime victory over then-No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday.

Purdue (6-1) struggled, shooting only 30%. But Chris Booker’s two free throws with 3:30 left gave the Boilermakers their first lead of the second half, 42-41.

After the Sooners took a 45-44 lead, the Boilermakers’ David Teague made a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to tie the score at 45 and set the stage for Lavender’s winning shot.

Oklahoma cleared the right side for Lavender, who drove into the lane and lofted his shot over the fingertips of Brandon McKnight.

The Boilermakers were off to their best start since 1993-94, when they went 14-0.

No. 14 Illinois 85, Maryland Eastern Shore 43 -- Roger Powell scored 19 points to lead the Fighting Illini past the Hawks at Champaign, Ill.

Luther Head added 16 points for Illinois (5-2). Maryland Eastern Shore (0-2) missed its first 12 shots and didn’t score until 7:07 into the game.

WOMEN

Shyra Ely had 18 points and 12 rebounds at Knoxville, Tenn., as No. 2 Tennessee (4-0) defeated Rutgers, 59-49. The Scarlet Knights (3-4) held a 38-32 with 12:47 remaining, but the Lady Volunteers used a 15-8 run to take a one-point lead. The teams traded the lead twice, but Cappie Pondexter’s basket with 6:28 remaining was Rutgers’ last until less than a minute was left.... Erica Smith-Taylor scored 14 points at Ruston, La., to lead No. 12 Louisiana Tech (5-1) to a 78-29 victory over Southern (1-4).... Sandora Irvin had 24 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks at Green Bay, Wis., to lead No. 19 Texas Christian (6-0) to a 62-51 victory over Wisconsin Green Bay (5-2).
