O’Neill Seeks Another Title

Share

With four days left in Hollywood Park’s autumn meet, Doug O’Neill still has a shot to win his third consecutive training title in Inglewood.

O’Neill, who is scheduled to run four horses in three races today, has 10 victories, leaving him fourth, two winners behind co-leaders Bobby Frankel and Jeff Mullins and one behind Bob Baffert.

The top trainer last fall with 16 victories and the runaway leader with 37 in the spring-summer meet earlier this year, O’Neill will saddle Height Of Summer in today’s second, Amiable Amy in the fourth and Pohave and Smile N Wildcat in the sixth.

All four are contenders. Height Of Summer is cutting back in distance after being claimed for $40,000 on Nov. 13, Amiable Amy looks like the filly to catch against nine other maidens, Pohave is also returning to his preferred game -- sprinting -- and Smile N Wildcat scored his most recent win at Hollywood Park more than a year ago.

Frankel and Mullins have no entrants today; Baffert has Stand And Fight in the eighth.

Race of the day: Brocky’s Dream, who has won twice on the Hollywood Park turf course, will make her first start for owner Michael Gill and trainer Nick Canani in today’s seventh, a $41,000 optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The 5-year-old Australian bred mare was claimed for $50,000 when she won Dec. 6. Other contenders in the field of seven include recent winner Annabelly, Xtrasensory and Any For Love.

One for the road: Bella Rouge gets a two-level boost in class by trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. The 5-year-old A.P. Jet mare is three for three on wet tracks, which is a plus considering the recent rainy weather in New York. She can win for the ninth time in 29 starts in today’s fifth at Aqueduct.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Tell No Tales in the third, Southern Rain, Ringading, Paseana’s Girl and Amiable Amy in the fourth and China Princess, Battante and Docket in the fifth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/80. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11.20/$421.80. Total money bet: $444.
