Survivor of Fatal Shooting on Beach Offers New Details

The survivor of a beachside shooting that left two men dead has given investigators fresh details about a man wanted for questioning in connection with the crimes, authorities said Tuesday.

The woman, whose identity was being withheld by investigators because she may be in danger, described the man as white, 35 to 37 years old, with dark, curly hair and “transient in appearance,” said Sgt. Ron Nelson of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

He wore a dark blue, zippered sweatshirt and black sweatpants and was carrying a black, camping-style backpack with a blanket in it, the woman told authorities.

The details are in addition to an earlier description of the man being 6 feet tall with a thin build and speaking with a slow, deliberate Southern accent.

Investigators said he was in the area at the time of the Jan. 26 shooting at Sycamore Cove State Beach off the Pacific Coast Highway.

The woman survived the attack with critical wounds but two friends, Francisco Orellano Miranda, 36, and Levi Orellana, 32, both of Newbury Park, were killed.

The woman remains at Ventura County Medical Center, where she is still in critical condition, Nelson said.

So far there is no motive for the attack, authorities said.

Orellana was a gardener from El Salvador and Orellano Miranda was a maintenance worker from Honduras.

Each man was married and had three children. Their families live in their respective homelands.
