For the second year in a row, Marina High School’s Academic Decathlon team has won the right to represent Orange County at the state competition.
The Huntington Beach team defeated 48 schools in a 10-event competition composed of tests in seven academic subjects along with an essay, speech and interview.
Results were announced at an awards banquet at the Irvine Marriott late Wednesday night, about two weeks after the contest took place.
Marina scored first in the “Jeopardy!”-like Super Quiz contest, which focused this year on oceanography. Overall, the team scored 42,463 points, nearly 1,000 points ahead of second-place Laguna Hills High. Trabuco Hills High in Mission Viejo placed third.
The nine-member Marina team will resume intensive study in the next few weeks before traveling to Modesto for the state competition, from March 7 through 9. The winner will go to Pennsylvania in April for the national competition.
