Officers shot and killed a man who fired at them from a sidewalk in South Los Angeles on Tuesday night, police said.

Two officers were on patrol on 55th Street near Holmes Avenue when the man began shooting, police said. They returned fire and the man tried to run. He fell, but as officers approached, he reached for his gun and officers fired again, Lt. Horace Frank said.

About 30 to 50 people surrounded police and began throwing things, police said. Officers called for help, and police in riot gear responded, moving the crowd west and north toward El Pueblo Del Rio Housing project.

Two hours later, an angry crowd remained outside the police tape, some cursing at officers.

One woman was identified by her friend as the mother of the dead man’s child.
