Cleaning reveals a ‘new’ Botticelli

London’s National Gallery has acquired a new Botticelli -- sort of.

A cleaning process has revealed that its painting “St. Francis With Musical Angels,” previously cataloged as being painted by “a follower of Botticelli, 1490-1500,” is actually an unrecognized painting by the real master, the Art Newspaper reports.

The Botticelli, the seventh work by the artist in the National Gallery, is an early work probably painted around 1468, and it is unusual for a mid-15th century Florentine painting because of its stamped gold background.
