Siblings Could Have Big Day

Share

If things go well today at Santa Anita, it could be a big day for owners Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss, trainer John Shirreffs and the broodmare Set Them Free.

In the first race, Styler, who is by Holy Bull out of the Stop The Music mare Set Them Free, will make her debut for the Mosses and Shirreffs against five older maiden fillies and mares going a flat mile.

Two races later, Sea Jewel, Styler’s half-sister, will seek her first graded stakes victory in the $100,000-added Santa Ysabel at 1 1/16 miles.

The first step on the road to the $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks on March 8, the Santa Ysabel, a Grade III, attracted six others, including Miesque winner Atlantic Ocean and California Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Summer Wind Dancer.

Successful by four lengths in her debut July 28 at Del Mar, Sea Jewel has failed to win in three subsequent starts, all graded races. After finishing a distant fourth in the Del Mar Debutante, she was third in the Oak Leaf, then fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

A $1.9-million purchase last year by the Thoroughbred Corporation, Atlantic Ocean made a successful transition to the turf in the Miesque. David Flores will again ride for trainer Bob Baffert.

Race of the day: Hard knocker Turkish Prize and defending champion Macward are among seven scheduled to run in the $100,000 Sensational Star Handicap at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Who’s hot: Indy Dancer and Atswhatimtalknabout. Both winners on Saturday at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita, the two colts look like 3-year-olds to watch.

The former is 2 for 2 for trainer Todd Pletcher andproven around two turns, and the latter was very impressive in his sprint debut for owner B. Wayne Hughes and trainer Ron Ellis.

Who’s not: Colum O’Brien. The New York-based trainer was one for 64 in 2002.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Macward and Turkish Prize in the sixth, singling Ten Most Wanted in the seventh, Giovannetti, Smile N Wildcat and Rapidough in the eighth and Mamone, T.J. Diamond, Ima Mile High Guy and Lakota in the ninth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 5/23. Money: Previous day/meet total: $28.60/$121.80. Total money bet: $156.
