Carey Has Surgery

New Mexico senior point guard Senque Carey was listed in good condition Monday following surgery for a spinal cord injury that had left his legs paralyzed for two weeks.

Surgeons at Stanford University Medical Center removed a bulging disk in his upper spine and fused the spine in that area. Carey will be in a neck brace for two months, then will have physical therapy for at least a year.

Carey, 24, was hurt Nov. 25 in the Lobos’ second game of the season, against Northwestern State. He was able to stand and walk by Dec. 8.

Former Missouri coach Norm Stewart was honored in a funny and touching ceremony at Kansas. He sat in a rocking chair at midcourt as fans cheered and laughed.

Kansas Coach Roy Williams told the crowd he wanted to honor Stewart not only for what he accomplished on the court, but for his efforts in raising money for cancer research.

Mississippi Valley State guard Michael Archie was paralyzed by a stray bullet fired in a nightclub shootout, his family said. Archie was hit in the side early Sunday in a shooting that also left a man dead and wounded two others. Doctors told Carol Archie that her son is “essentially” paralyzed from the waist down.... A day after being arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Texas El Paso Coach Billy Gillispie denied he’d done anything wrong. Gillispie was stopped Sunday for driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
