This Team Is Tough to Defeat

The champion jockey and trainer of 2002 have continued their success in the new year.

Ramon Sanchez and Paul Jones, who were given the quarter horse equivalent of an Eclipse Award earlier in the month, had a lot of success last week. The two combined to win four races Thursday night, then teamed with easy winner Tiene Mucho Blanco in the $27,050 Super Bowl Handicap on Saturday.

Tiene Mucho Blanco, a 3-year-old, missed the track record by a tenth of a second when winning the 550-yard Super Bowl by 1 3/4 lengths over 18-1 longshot Splash Of Glory. He covered the seldom-run distance in 26.78 seconds. Scott Lewis set the record of 26.68 in 1983.

Jones and Sanchez will team twice tonight as the track begins its normal four-day week after running only three nights last week because of the Super Bowl. The two will collaborate with Shell Ha in the seventh, a $12,850 allowance for 3-year-old fillies at 300 yards, and with recent winner Highly Rated in the eighth, a $5,000 claimer for older fillies and mares at 300 yards.

Shots in the dark: Bein A Blurr could run well off a layoff in the fifth. Notably Noble gets jockey Ramon Guce for his debut in the sixth.
