Roberto Alomar’s disappointing stay with the New York Mets ended Tuesday when the 12-time All-Star second baseman was traded to the Chicago White Sox for three minor league prospects.

In exchange for Alomar, the Mets received pitchers Royce Ring and Edwin Almonte and infielder Andrew Salvo.

Late Tuesday, the White Sox reached agreement on a trade for Texas outfielder Carl Everett.

Chicago will let the Rangers pick either two or three prospects from a pool, a baseball source with knowledge of the trade said. The White Sox will also receive cash from Texas to offset part of Everett’s $9.15-million contract.

The Alomar trade marks the beginning of a long-expected makeover of the Mets. The team is in last place for the second straight season despite having a $116.9-million payroll on opening day, the second highest in baseball.

White Sox General Manager Ken Williams, once Alomar’s teammate, welcomed the trade.

“It gives us an experienced, battle-tested veteran that has proven he can withstand a pennant race and play big in big games,” Williams said.

Alomar, 35, is in the final season of a contract that pays him $8 million. He came to New York in an eight-player trade with Cleveland after batting .336 with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs for the Indians in 2001.

The trade reunites Alomar with his brother, Sandy, who signed as a free-agent catcher with the White Sox before this season. As part of the deal, the Mets agreed to pay $3.75 million of the remainder of Alomar’s contract with the White Sox paying $150,000, the prorated share of the major league minimum.

Chacon, the NL leader in victories with 11, has experienced soreness in his pitching elbow in his last three starts.

Chacon, 11-4 with a 4.27 earned-run average in 17 starts, had one of his worst outings of the season in Sunday’s 9-0 loss to Pittsburgh. He gave up six hits and six runs in four innings.

Boston Red Sox Manager Grady Little said that Byung-Hyun Kim will be moved from the rotation into the closer’s role.

Before Tuesday, Boston’s bullpen by committee had converted 17 of 28 save opportunities.

Kim was acquired by Boston from Arizona on May 29 for All-Star third baseman Shea Hillenbrand.

The right-hander wants to be a starter, and Little said Kim will be a starter for the Red Sox someday.

Cincinnati Red outfielder Austin Kearns apparently did not seriously injure his right shoulder in a home plate collision with Atlanta’s Ray King on May 21. MRIs performed Tuesday were negative, according to the Reds.

Kearns’ statistics have dropped off significantly since the collision. He hit .309 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 45 games before the injury but has a .219 average with two homers and 13 RBIs in 31 games since.

Outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds, released last month by the Milwaukee Brewers, signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Hammonds batted .158 with one home run and three RBIs with the Brewers before going on the 15-day disabled list because of a high ankle sprain. He was released June 4.
