Fedorov Is Finished With the Red Wings

Sergei Fedorov’s agent said the high-scoring forward will not return to the Detroit Red Wings next season.

“We made it official today that Sergei is ready to move on,” agent Pat Brisson said Wednesday.

Negotiations between the 33-year-old unrestricted free agent and the Red Wings did not progress in the days leading up to Monday’s deadline before free agency.

Brisson said he has been talking to several teams he declined to identify.

“Obviously he was a great player for us for a lot of years,” Red Wing General Manager Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press. “I thought we made tremendous offers. It’s unfortunate that Pat and Sergei feel this way.”

Fedorov spent his first 13 NHL seasons with the Red Wings. He scored 400 goals and had 554 assists.

Fedorov was the league’s most valuable player in 1994. Detroit won the Stanley Cup three times with Fedorov -- in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Chicago re-signed defenseman Jason Strudwick. Terms of the deal were not released.... Carolina signed free agent Joey Tetarenko to a one-year contract worth $450,000....The new Toronto owners, the shareholders and directors of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., officially took over the club.

Longtime referee Paul Stewart and linesmen Gerard Gauthier and Wayne Bonney retired from the NHL.

Stewart, 48, last season became the first American-born referee to work 1,000 regular-season games.

Gauthier, 54, worked 2,345 regular-season games and six Stanley Cup finals.

Bonney, 50, worked 1,658 regular-season games and five finals.

Jurisprudence

Former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson pleaded no contest at Tallahassee, Fla., to gambling and theft charges under a deal in which he avoids prison time but will serve 30 months of probation.

McPherson had faced up 20 years in prison on charges stemming from allegations he stole a blank check, filled it out and cashed it for $3,500.

Former baseball star Jose Canseco was released from jail after making a special request to be freed for a five-day visit with his 6-year-old daughter, Josie, who is visiting from California, where his ex-wife lives.

Canseco has been in jail since last month after allegedly violating probation a second time for a nightclub scuffle. Canseco was ordered held until a court hearing July 21 on whether he violated his probation by testing positive for steroids.

Women’s Basketball

Spark guard Tamecka Dixon was added to the Western Conference roster for the WNBA All-Star game in New York on July 12. It was Dixon’s third All-Star selection.

Tamika Catchings scored 26 points and Natalie Williams had 23, and Indiana defeated Phoenix, 79-68, in front of 6,195 at Indianapolis.... Yolanda Griffith scored 20 points and Sacramento beat Washington, 83-62, in front of 6,336 at Sacramento. The Mystics lost their seventh in a row.... Katie Douglas scored 23 points and Connecticut defeated Cleveland, 64-57, in front of 4,169 at Uncasville, Conn.

Miscellany

Ryan Hollins of UCLA and David Burgess of Irvine Woodbridge High were selected to the 12-player USA Junior World Championship men’s basketball team.

The team will compete July 10-20 in the FIBA Men’s Junior World Championship that was recently moved from Malaysia to Thessaloniki, Greece.

Mercedes-Benz USA has extended through 2005 its sponsorship of the Mercedes-Benz Cup tennis tournament at UCLA.
