Four children were injured -- two of them critically -- Friday after being ejected from a sport utility vehicle that had collided with a tanker truck on the Golden State Freeway, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The children, who ranged from 5 to 9 years old, were not wearing seat belts when the accident took place just after 8 a.m. in the freeway’s northbound lanes in Arleta, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

One of the critically injured was flown by helicopter to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles while two others were flown to County-USC Medical Center. A fourth child and an adult were treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Wells said.

The Ford Explorer’s tire blew out and the vehicle careened into the center divider before striking the empty tanker.
