Body Surfer, 23, Drowns Off Huntington Beach
A 23-year-old body surfer drowned off Huntington Beach in relatively small surf Tuesday after enjoying a cookout with friends.
“I can’t tell you if he was a good swimmer or a poor swimmer,” Kai Weisser, a city lifeguard, said of the man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives. “It was approaching dark -- that’s all we have.”
The incident occurred about 8:15 p.m. between lifeguard towers 22 and 24 just north of Goldenwest Street, Weisser said. The surf was a moderate 1 to 3 feet. Lifeguards, who were notified by an onlooker with a cell phone, arrived to find the man, who had apparently been pulled out by a friend, being administered CPR by a passerby.
The surfer was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The incident is under investigation, Weisser said.
