Brown Remains on Schedule to Return

The Dodgers have not released the results of the latest tests performed on injured ace Kevin Brown, but the right-hander had a bullpen session Wednesday and remains “on track” to rejoin the rotation this week, Manager Jim Tracy said.

Brown is on the disabled list because of a lower abdomen strain he suffered July 3 against the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers plan to activate him Saturday to start against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.

The teams resume play tonight in the opener of a four-game series.

Before the All-Star break, Brown underwent a second MRI exam, CT scan and ultrasound. He backed out of Tuesday’s All-Star game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago and returned to Los Angeles to meet with team physicians Frank Jobe and Michael Mellman.

However, the Dodgers did not provide an update on Brown’s situation during Wednesday’s optional workout at Dodger Stadium. Brown threw for about 25 minutes while pitching coach Jim Colborn watched, and then Brown ran.

Brown is 10-4 with a 2.30 earned-run average in 18 starts, but has losses in his last three outings.

A Panorama City man charged with criminal trespassing for running onto the field May 21 at Dodger Stadium pleaded no contest in Los Angeles Superior Court and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Oscar Villanueva, 26, also must perform 30 days of Caltrans work and cannot go to Dodger Stadium for three years. And the court issued a protective order that prohibits Villanueva from having contact with left fielder Brian Jordan.

Villanueva ran onto the outfield in the ninth inning of the Dodgers’ 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

He was punched and thrown to the ground by center fielder Jason Romano before being subdued by stadium security personnel.

“We worked with the Dodgers in order to get a sentence that would make a statement, in light of recent incidents the last two years at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago,” said Eric Moses, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney’s office.

With the addition of outfielders Jeromy Burnitz and Rickey Henderson, Tracy said he was mulling his new options and had not decided on a batting order for tonight.

“The only thing I can guarantee,” Tracy said, “is that Rickey Henderson is going to bat leadoff.”
