It’s a Double Loss for Tigers’ Cornejo

Nate Cornejo of the Detroit Tigers had a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings. Then, in a matter of minutes, he had the loss as the Chicago White Sox rallied to win, 6-2, Saturday night at Chicago.
Pinch-hitter Tony Graffanino hit a three-run homer in the seventh off reliever Jamie Walker, ruining a strong effort by Cornejo.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Cornejo (4-8) didn’t yield a hit until Paul Konerko grounded a single between short and third with two out in the seventh, starting a string of seven consecutive hits.
Jose Valentin followed with another single and then Joe Crede blooped an RBI single to center to cut Detroit’s lead to 2-1 as Cornejo lost his shutout.
Kansas City 5, Seattle 1 -- Darrell May pitched eight strong innings to win his fifth consecutive start and Aaron Guiel hit a two-run double at Kansas City.
May (5-4) yielded three hits, none after Dan Wilson’s second-inning double. He has a 1.50 earned-run average in his last five starts. In that span, May has given up 25 hits and six earned runs in 36 innings.
New York 7, Cleveland 4 -- Derek Jeter scored from first on Jason Giambi’s bases-loaded single in the fifth inning, and the Yankees won their fourth in a row.
Jody Gerut and Milton Bradley hit consecutive home runs to give the Indians a 4-2 lead at Yankee Stadium, but C.C. Sabathia (8-5) couldn’t hold it.
The Yankees loaded the bases with none out in the fifth, and Sabathia had a chance to get out of the jam after Enrique Wilson grounded into a double play. But Alfonso Soriano walked and Jeter lined an RBI single that made the score 4-3.
With the bases loaded and the 6-foot-7, 290-pound Sabathia working from a slow windup, Jeter took off at full speed from first on three straight 3-2 pitches to Giambi.
After two foul balls, Giambi grounded a single up the middle. Jeter was at second by the time the pitch reached the plate and scored easily to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.
Boston 5, Toronto 4 -- Trot Nixon singled through a drawn-in infield to score Gabe Kapler from third base in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Red Sox.
Texas 7, Tampa Bay 3 -- Doug Glanville hit a two-run double during a four-run second inning at St. Petersburg, Fla. Devil Ray starter Victor Zambrano (6-5) tied a league record by hitting four batters, becoming the 24th pitcher since 1900 to do so.
