Lou Henson Has Cancer

Lou Henson says he plans to continue coaching men’s basketball at New Mexico State even though he was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Henson, 71, has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that affects the body’s lymph system, the school said Tuesday.

Henson, preparing for his 41st season of coaching, ranks second among active Division I coaches in victories with 762. Bob Knight is first with 809.

Missouri kicked Ricky Clemons off its basketball team, ending his troubled career with the Tigers.

Athletic Director Mike Alden went to the Boone County Jail in Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday morning to tell Clemons that he was revoking his athletic scholarship.

Clemons was accused of choking a woman and holding her against her will at his apartment in January. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in April and was serving time in a halfway house when he got into an auto accident near the home of the university president earlier this month.

After Clemons’ guilty plea, Alden said he and Coach Quin Snyder signed an agreement with Clemons about his behavior. Alden said Clemons violated that agreement when on July 4, Clemons was hurt in an all-terrain vehicle accident near the home of University of Missouri system President Elson Floyd. Clemons, who was serving his jail sentence in a Columbia halfway house, did not have permission to be out that night.

Hockey

The Dallas Stars sent defenseman Darryl Sydor to the Columbus Blue Jackets and acquired defenseman Teppo Numminen from the Phoenix Coyotes as part of a three-way trade.

Mike Sillinger went from Columbus to Phoenix, via Dallas, with the Stars picking up a second-round pick in next year’s entry draft from the Blue Jackets.

Numminen, who signed a one-year contract on June 30, has played his entire 15-year career with the Phoenix-Winnipeg organization. Sydor, a former King, had 62 goals and 238 assists in 575 games with Dallas.

The Mighty Ducks signed center Samuel Pahlsson and defenseman/left wing Lance Ward to two-year contracts.

Pahlsson, 25, had four goals and 11 assists in 34 games with the Mighty Ducks last season. He had two goals and four assists in 21 playoff games.

Ward, 25, had one assist in 29 games with the Ducks after being acquired with Sandis Ozolinsh from Florida last January.

Boston agreed to a one-year contract with veteran forward Ted Donato.... The New York Islanders re-signed goalies Garth Snow and Rick DiPietro to one-year contracts.

Tennis

Top-seeded Andy Roddick won four of the last five points in the third-set tiebreaker and advanced to the third round of the RCA Championships at Indianapolis with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4) victory over Cyril Saulnier.

No. 3 Sjeng Schalken beat unseeded Ivan Miranda, 6-3, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill eliminated Thomas Enqvist by the same score.

Bohdan Ulihrach played his first match since his two-year drug ban was overturned, losing to Spain’s Albert Portas, 6-4, 6-2, in the Generali Open at Kitzbuehel, Austria. Also out was defending champion Alex Corretja, who was upset by Austria’s Werner Eschauer, 6-4, 6-4.

Maria Vento-Kabchi upset eighth-seeded Nadia Petrova, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), in the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford.... Top-seeded Carlos Moya won his opening match at the Croatia Open at Umag, beating Jiri Vanek, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Golf

Sukjin-Lee Wuesthoff of Toms River, N.J., shot an even-par 71 at Brooklawn County Club to finish at one-under-par 141 before lightning strikes in the Fairfield, Conn., area forced suspension of second-round play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. First-round leader Michelle Wie of Honolulu completed only two holes.

Sung Hoon Kong of Korea finished at three-under 137 to earn medalist honors after two rounds of stroke play at the U.S. Junior Amateur in Chevy Chase, Md. Southland players Sean Harlingten of Rancho Mirage and James Lee of Indio made the cut for match play, which begins this morning at Columbia Country Club.

Ben Curtis, the surprise winner of the British Open, withdrew from the Greater Hartford Open, which begins Thursday.

Miscellany

Alabama State’s internal investigation revealed an “almost totally out of control” football program that used ineligible players, changed athletes’ grades and entertained recruits with strippers, Athletic Director Richard Cosby said.

The university submitted its findings to the NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference on Tuesday, Cosby said.

The probe began seven months ago, after former assistant coach Dedrick Bell sent university officials a letter containing numerous alleged NCAA rules violations.

The United States edged Japan for its second consecutive victory at the World Grand Prix women’s volleyball tournament at Matera, Italy.
