From Staff and Wire Reports

Rene Douglas rode seven winners on nine mounts Thursday at Arlington Park in Illinois, missing the track record by one win.

Douglas, 36, a Panamanian whose many U.S. stops have included a stay in California, won the first five races, finished fifth in the sixth race, won the seventh and eighth and then finished third in the ninth. Five of Douglas’ winners were favorites.

The Arlington record of eight wins was set by Pat Day, from nine mounts, on Sept. 13, 1989.

Jose Santos, the jockey who rode Funny Cide to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, was suspended 10 days for careless riding at Saratoga.

Santos filed an appeal, and a stay was granted.

The suspension could jeopardize Santos’ chance to ride in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3.
