A 598-page proposal for the largest development in the history of unincorporated Monterey County is hot off the presses.

The Rancho San Juan project calls for a 20-year, phased development of 4,000 homes on 2,500 acres now used mostly for farming.

“I think there will be a lot of interest,” said assistant county planning director Alana Knaster.

Hearings on the plan, along with permits for a 670-acre portion of Rancho San Juan area called Butterfly Village, probably will be held late this year before the county Planning Commission and early next year before the Board of Supervisors.
