Top-seeded Serena Williams was supposed to replace injured Venus Williams in the $1-million Acura Classic this week. Instead, she will join her older sister on the sidelines.

Serena Williams pulled out of the 20th annual tournament Monday because of a strained left quadriceps. Tournament officials announced the withdrawal after the day portion of first-round play at La Costa. Williams, who also withdrew last week from a Palo Alto tournament because of recurring knee pain, underwent an MRI in Los Angeles on Monday and was advised by a doctor to rest, a WTA Tour official said.

“We’re disappointed but we understand,” Acura tournament co-director Raquel Giscafre said.

Alexandra Stevenson (strained right shoulder) and Nathalie Dechy (wrist) also withdrew.
