City Blames Closure of Fire Station on Union

From Staff and Wire Reports

The city announced Monday that it will close the Jack London Square Fire Station and decommission a fireboat, because negotiations with union leaders fell apart.

The station’s 13 employees have already been transferred elsewhere, said City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente. An unidentified firetruck company will also be closed by Aug. 15, and another fire station will get the ax next July.

De La Fuente said the stations would have stayed open if the firefighters union had agreed to pay an additional 3% into their pension plans, a request made of all four unions representing city employees.
