Girl, 11, Critical After Touching Power Line
From Times Staff Reports
An 11-year-old girl who climbed over two fences to retrieve a basketball from an electrical substation touched a 60,000-volt line and was critically burned Friday, a county fire official said.
The girl suffered burns over about 65% of her body, said Capt. Dean Douty. “We’re still amazed at how she got in there,” he said, adding that the girl apparently scaled fences topped with barbed wire. “It’s posted with ‘Danger -- High Voltage’ signs everywhere. It’s not an easy place to get into for obvious reasons.”
