Shock Wins With Bit of Defense
The Detroit Shock used a strong defense to hold the Indiana Fever scoreless for a six-minute stretch in the second half Tuesday and went on to win, 68-60, for a franchise-record seventh consecutive victory before 3,532 at Auburn Hills, Mich.
“A lot of people think that all we can do is run up and down the court,” said Swin Cash, who scored 21 points. “We know that we can grind games out -- our defense is something we work on every day in practice.”
Detroit (7-1) surpassed its record of six consecutive victories in 1998.
Tamika Catchings had 17 points for the Fever (5-5), which is 1-5 on the road.
Connecticut 65, Washington 63 -- Taj McWilliams-Franklin made a five-foot running bank shot at the buzzer to lift the Sun in front of 11,453 at Washington.
Shannon Johnson and Katie Douglas scored 18 points apiece for the Sun (6-5). Coco Miller scored 13 points for the Mystics (2-8), who have lost five in a row.
San Antonio 60, Sacramento 57 -- Marie Ferdinand scored 17 points and the Silver Stars (5-7) overcame a sluggish first half in front of 6,029 to earn their first road victory this season.
Tangela Smith scored 12 points and Yolanda Griffith had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Monarchs (5-8).
