It’s a Record Day for Devers

Gail Devers broke her American record in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday, winning a qualifying heat in 7.74 seconds at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. She later won the final for her 14th national title.

Devers ran 7.85 in the final to earn a U.S. championship in her fourth event. She will be joined at the world indoor championships in Birmingham, England, on March 14-16 by Melissa Morrison, who finished second in 7.88.

Justin Gatlin won the 60-meter dash in 6.45 -- the best time in the world this year -- and Allen Johnson won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.39.

Defending champion Tim Rusan won the men’s triple jump with a leap of 57-3, the best mark in the world this year. Walter Davis was second at 56-6 1/2.

Winter Sports

Caroline Lalive of Steamboat Springs, Colo., broke two ribs, injured her back and tore ligaments in her right knee in a crash after crossing the finish line of a World Cup downhill at Innsbruck, Austria.

Lalive, who finished 24th, caught a ski in the snow, causing her to twist and fall headfirst. She slid into a barrier in the finish area, where she was hit in the head with one ski, and in the back with the other. Lalive, 23, was taken to the Innsbruck University clinic for surgery on her knee.

Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria won the race with a time of 1 minute 31.51 seconds.

Michael von Gruenigen of Switzerland narrowly beat Frederic Covili of France to win a World Cup giant slalom in Yongpyong, South Korea.

Von Gruenigen had a two-run combined time of 2 minutes 26.68 seconds to win by .17 of a second. Bode Miller of Franconia, N.H., finished third in 2:27.00.

Second-seeded Amanda Coetzer defeated Emilie Loit, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the final of the Mexican Open tennis tournament in Acapulco.... Top-seeded Roger Federer defeated Ivan Ljubicic, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the final of the Dubai Open at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He will play third-seeded Jiri Novak, who beat Tommy Robredo, 6-4, 6-1.... Second-seeded Kim Clijsters defeated Meghan Shaughnessy, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals of the State Farm Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Antonio Chatman caught 10 passes for 144 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Chicago Rush defeated the Buffalo Destroyers, 40-13, in the Arena Football League.
