From Times Staff Reports

A Fontana police officer was shot in the abdomen Saturday night after he stopped a driver for a traffic violation, authorities said.

Police were searching into the night for two or three men in their early 20s with shaved heads who ran from the car into the neighborhood after the 6 p.m. shooting.

Investigators said the officer pulled the driver over near a Walgreens store in the 6100 block of Barbee Street. It appears he did not know that two men with handguns had carjacked the vehicle Friday in Rancho Cucamonga, authorities said.

The officer was shot several times in the torso and returned fire, said police Capt. Larry Clark. Investigators do not know if the men were hit.

The 27-year-old officer, a four-year veteran, was undergoing surgery at Arrowhead Medical Center and was expected to survive, police said.
